Gowanus Waterfront Framework

We were tasked with producing a planning scheme for a site of our choosing within Brooklyn’s Gowanus neighborhood, taking into account the existing Gowanus Neighborhood Plan developed in coordination with local government and community stakeholders.

Expanding upon these planning precedents, and inspired by the Wild Mile in Chicago, this project re-envisions a stretch along the Gowanus Canal as a floating eco-park. In the process, we aim to reconnect the local community to the waterfront, provide much-needed public space and mitigate pollution levels in the canal.

We also propose to adaptively reuse the extensive industrial buildings and infrastructure in the neighborhood into creative mixed-use hubs that co-locate affordable housing with resources such as community kitchens and gardens, public libraries, art studios, and coworking spaces.
